In the heart of Time Square, in New York, stands a bronze statue of the beloved chaplain of the "Fighting Sixty-Ninth" Regiment - a constant reminder to New Yorkers of all faiths of the heroic bravery of Father Duffy and the men of his regiment.
Father Duffy was born in the Canadian town of Cobourg, just across the border from the United States. This is the story of his childhood as a mill-town boy, of his student days in the bustling city of Toronto, and of his happy years as an inspiring teacher. When World War I broke out, Father Duffy was pastor of a large New York City parish. He was appointed chaplain of the Sixty-Ninth - New York's Irish regiment - and he went gladly with his men to the shell-rocked trenches of France, to give them priestly comfort and courage.
The fighting heroism of Father Duffy and the men of the Sixty-Ninth is history now - a proud chapter in the story of America's part in World War I.
