Description
One of the predominant trends in modern spiritual writing has been the emphasis on Christ as the focal point of all spiritual growth. Since Jesus is the perfect exemplar and model of supernatural perfection. it is eminently fitting that He should be proposed to all Christians as the source of all holiness and the goal of all supernatural striving, even to the point of the transformation of the soul in Christ.

The present volume is a book of solid doctrine, true devotion and tender unction. Archbishop Martinez writes as one who has lived in the closest possible union with Jesus, whom he calls the Beloved of his soul. With the deft strokes of a masterly theologian he delineates in the simplest possible language the secret of true love of God and the bittersweet fruits of that love. Then, having shown Jesus' love for the Father and for souls, the Archbishop shows how that same love can transform the soul into Christ. Finally, after an unusually beautiful and devout treatise on the Sacred Heart of Jesus, he closes his book with meditations on holy abandonment and the mutual indwelling of Jesus in the holy soul and the holy soul in Jesus.

If Archbishop Martinez had never written any other book but the present volume, that alone would suffice to place his name in the list of the outstanding spiritual writers of modern times - Dom Marmion, Father Faber, Monsignor Gay, Father Plus and Father Mura, to mention some of the writers who have been pre-eminently Christocentric.

The Author

Archbishop Martinez became a bishop in 1923 and lived through some of the most turbulent years in the history of Mexico. His social views were considered quite liberal and he was fully aware of the need of adaptations to modern times. He was the author of numerous books on the spiritual life, usually emphasizing one of the three following themes: the Holy Spirit, Jesus and charity. Three of his works, in addition to the present volume, have been translated into English: Secrets of the Interior Life, The Sanctifier and Liturgical Preludes. He became Primate of Mexico in 1951 and died in Mexico City in 1956.

The Translator

Sister Mary St. Daniel is a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, currently stationed in Burbank, California. She became acquainted with the writings of Archbishop Martinez while residing in Mexico City and in addition to the present volume she is the translator of Liturgical Preludes, published by Peter Reilly Company of Philadelphia.
