Description
Classic History from America's most beloved, 19th Century author. The story of George Washington's heroic life is well known to most Americans, in fact few men in history have generated more biographies. Washington died on 14 December, 1799 at his home, Mt. Vernon. Harry Lee eulogized Washington thus. "First in war, first in peace, first in the eyes of his countrymen, he was second to none, in the humble and endearing scenes of private life."

Irving described his work on Life of Washington to his niece. "I have availed myself of the license of biography, to step down occasionally from the elevated wall of history, and relate familiar things in a familiar way; seeking to show the prevalent passions and feelings and humors of the day, and even to depict the heroes of Seventy six as they really were - men in cocked hats, regimental coats, and breeches; and not classic warriors, in shining armor and flowing mantles, with brows bound with laurel, and truncheons in their hands."

Volume 1 of 2 is the abridged "Student" version of this magnificent biography of George Washington, from the story-teller famous for Rip van Winkle & The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
