Description
The object of this book is to present clearly the nature and obligations of the religious life. It therefore explains in detail the canonical aspects of the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience so that both superiors and subjects will understand exactly what is required according to the New Code of Canon Law. The author also considers the ascetical side of the vows, and these questions are indicated by an asterisk.

This book therefore provides a guide not only for superiors, chaplains and confessors, but for novices and Religious themselves. Theological students will find herein an expanded and practical treatment of this phase of theology.

Peter Cotel, S.J., was born at Hangest (Somme) in 1800 and died at Nancy in 1884. He was a professor of history and rhetoric at Bruglete and during the greater part of his religious life was a master of novices and spiritual director. After issuing "The Art of Rhetoric" in 1840, he published various ascetical works among which the best known is the "Catechism of the Vows."
