Description
The story of the life's journey of Giuseppe Sarto is the story of a journey of love - a consuming love for God and man which led the peasant boy of Riese to the chair of Peter at Rome. In this new biography one finds the key to this "man of destiny of the Church." It tells the story of a life dedicated with courageous singleness of purpose toward the realization of that sublime dream of St. Paul "to restore all things in Christ." Toward this monumental goal Pius X worked and wrote tirelessly bringing into play all the facets of a compelling personality in which great humility, charity, and personal charm are remarkably balanced by intellectual brilliance, wisdom, and political skill.

In retrospect, every step along the way is seen to be a step toward sainthood. The lad who gladly trod barefoot a dozen miles a day in summer heat and winter cold toward the priesthood became the country curate whose ministry was the real ministry of service, whose activities covered every phase of parish life and whose charity knew no bounds - even to the extent of giving the food off his stove. The country curate became in turn pastor of Salerno; chancellor of the diocese; Bishop of Mantua; Patriarch of Venice; Cardinal; and finally, most unwillingly, Pope. Through it all the scene alone changed, for Giuseppe Sarto became ultimately exactly the same kind of Pope as he was a parish priest.

Notable among his achievements are his work for more frequent Communion and for earlier first Communion of children; the encyclicals on the dogma of the Immaculate Conception; establishment of a commission to codify canon law; battle against anticlericalism; efficient dealing with the "Roman question"; powerful widespread efforts to establish Catholic action and on the behalf of sacred music and fine arts; and heroic and successful struggle against Modernism. These are discussed here in the light of the times and events which produced them.
