Sound piety should be based on sound doctrine. Without the guidance of good theological principles, teachings and practices of piety are exposed to the danger of fanciful vagaries and exaggerations.

Acquaintance with these principles is particularly valuable to those whose office or opportunity it is to guide and advise souls sincerely aspiring to holiness. Such spiritual counselors are fortunate to have available this present work by so eminent a theologian as Father Garrigou-Lagrange. His name alone is ample guaranty of the principles and views he sets forth with his usual fullness and clearness of treatment.

The scope of the present volume is indicated by the titles of its three parts:

I. God's Love for Us, Our Return of Love; and the Mystery of the Cross;

II. The Love of God and Mortification;

III. The Laws of Progress in Love of God.

Ascetical theology ought to be familiar terrain for all priests and religious superiors. This work of Father Garrigou-Lagrange will help to equip them with the knowledge they need.
