Description
Here, in one comprehensive volume, is a fascinating overview of human artistic development. From teh cave art of our earliest ancestors and the wonders of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, it takes us through the full range of awe-inspiring Gothic and Renaissance masterpieces, and on to the modern expressions of human creative potential reflected in today's art and architecture.

H.W. Janson and Samuel cauman organized the material in the original edition of History of Art for Young People to provide a thorough introduction to the entire range of Western artistic creation from the dawn of history to the present day. Now, Anthony F. Janson, Senior Curator at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, has revised and enriched this text to include other examples of artistic expression in all its exhilarating variety.

The book is divided into four parts: How Art Began, The Middle Ages, The Renaissance, and The Modern World. The paintings, sculpture, and buildings are discussed withing their human as well as historical context, since all art begins with a man or woman seeking a form or forum for the creative impulse. Maps and synoptic tables accompany each section.

H.W. Janson was Professor of Fine Arts at the Institute of Fine Arts and at New York University. For twenty-five years he served as Chairman of the Department of Fine Arts at Washington Square College of New York University. His publications include the world-famous History of Art, The Story of Painting for Young People, Key Monuments of the History of Art, Apes and Ape Lore in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and The Sculpture of Donatello. His collaborator, the late Samuel Cauman, was an informed and gifted writer on art.

There are over 400 illustrations in this edition of History of Art for Young People, including 76 in full color, all of which are discussed in the text. A glossary, a detailed index, and a selected list of books for further reading provide additional reference material for the reader who would like to explore any aspect of our artistic heritage at greater length.
