Description
For many years, owing to a lack of necessary source materials, it was practically impossible to write a life of St. Dominic which would meet the requirements of modern hagiography. The establishment of the Dominican Historical Institute in Rome after World War I solved that difficulty with its collection of authentic basis documents on the life of St. Dominic. Several excellent biographies were written, but the fact that after seven hundred years Dominic's life was still the subject of historians' endeavors was clear proof that the full impact of the saint's personality and works had not yet been adequately explored.
The accounts and depositions of the Historical Institute's wellsprings of information permit sundry interpretations. Consequently the present biography digressing from previously accepted versions adds its own special contribution to the ever-expanding insight into the personality of this remarkable man. It is distinguished by being the only recent biography of the saint available in English, and as such is a reference of special interest to Americans.
Fashioning a vivid picture of the times in which Dominic lived, it centers attention on those obstacles confronting this Castilian firebrand in his struggles to rekindle the flaming tree of faith in the hearts of an indifferent people. It shows how Dominic, hampered by a clergy entangled in worldly affairs and given to a life of ease and comfort, nevertheless succeeded in forging an instrument for smashing the sinister threat of Albigensianism. The author demonstrates how Dominic's success was largely due to a personality characterized by a keenness of mind, a charming inward and outward tranquillity, and a mysticism which led him to stalwart devotion to his fellow men for the love of God. Capturing as it does the very essence of Dominic's personality and the driving religious spirit that dominated his every act, As the Morning Star, is destined to be one of the most popular biographies of the saint for years to come.
