Description
From shadow and fantasy to truth.

These words, inscribed on the tomb of John Henry Cardinal Newman, aptly describe his life, in which the search for understanding never ceased. And they indicate why, for more than a century, men have found in the questing Newman a companion and guide.

In this selection from the writings of Newman, which was prepared in the library of the Birmingham Oratory where Newman lived, Father Blehl has captured the current and flow of Newman's extraordinary mind. Here we see his relentless logic, his psychological penetration, his theological brilliance, and above all, his deep and final dedication to truth.

A series of major works of Catholic thought, Mentor-Omega Books include Christian classics in modern translation, essential writings of major Catholic figures, and those contemporary books by Catholics that are destined to be of lasting value.

Vincent Ferrer Blehl is well known in the field of Newman scholarship. He has conducted an extensive study into the definitive editions of Cardinal Newman's letters in the archives of Rome and Dublin, and the Birmingham Oratory archives in England. Father Blehl is Assistant Professor of English at Fordham University and Director of the Center of Newman Studies; he holds an MA in English from Fordham, and a doctorate in English from Harvard.
