Description
In this complete treatise on the practice of prayer, the reader will find a happy blending of theory and practice. Father Moschner first explains the dogmatic foundations of the nature and necessity of prayer, following the basic lines of the teaching of St. Teresa of Avila and St. Ignatius Loyola. He then proceeds to give detailed descriptions of the various grades of prayer and numerous practical considerations which are of great value to the contemporary Christian.

Father Moschner writes from long years of experience as a professor, spiritual director and preacher. In this one volume he has summarized all that has been said in many other treatises, both ancient and modern. Unlike numerous treatises which place great emphasis on methods and detailed plans for mental prayer, Father Moschner insists rather on prayer as the language of one's love of God and therefore allows for greater personal liberty to correspond to the movements of divine inspiration.

It will be evident that the author of this volume is not only convinced that the higher grades of prayer are within the normal development of the Christian life but that each Christian ought to consciously tend toward the more lofty aspects of prayer. This does not mean that Father Moschner would want to guide all souls - whether priests, religious or laity - to the practices of the contemplative life, but that he wishes to impress upon them that mystical prayer and the mystical state are available to all souls, even those immersed in the greatest activity, simply because the perfection of charity and, therefore, the perfection of one's prayer life, consists in the actuation of the gifts of the Holy Ghost in the life of the Christian.

The Author

Father Franz Moschner was born in Meklenburg, Germany, in 1896. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1921 and shortly after was given charge of a parish in Bremen. For the last thirty years he has been occupied with the care of souls and the teaching of religion in various schools in Bremen. Father Moschner is best known for his conferences, sermons, and writings. One of his books, The Kingdom of Heaven in Parables, has already appeared in the Cross and Crown Series of Spirituality.

The Translator

Elisabeth Plettenberg resides in Lucerne, Switzerland, and has had previous experience in translating from German to English. The fact that she studied under Father Moschner and was able to visit him frequently during the course of the present translation makes her eminently qualified as a translator of the present volume.

A translation of Christliches Gebetsleben, third edition, published by Verlag Herder Freiburg, 1953.
