Description
Technically, the Shroud of Turin is a piece of linen, approximately fourteen feet long and three and one-half feet wide, on which appears the frontal and dorsal image of a full-grown man. Theoretically, its implications are awesome. It has caused a furor among theologians, doctors, art experts, and Scripture scholars. Is it the burial sheet of Christ, stained with His Precious Blood? The clever forgery of a medieval artist? Or merely a cloth in which some unknown crucified criminal was wrapped many centuries ago?

From a chaos of diverse opinions, the author has sorted out the soundest data for and against the credibility of the Shroud. His treatment is exhaustive and precise, based on his own intensive studies and those of other European scholars. He has submitted his work to the scrutiny of experts and similarly, the translators have checked each technical term with a specialist in the field. What has emerged is an exacting, fascinating story.

Readers will learn the history of the Shroud; the attitude of the Church on this highly disputed topic; important studies of textile and art experts; the prominent role photography has played in the whole issue and in revealing the unique beauty and majesty of the Face on the Shroud. The investigations of doctors (who support the Shroud's authenticity almost without exception), exegetes and archaeologists are fully presented. Throughout, ample notes from a wealth of reliable sources furnish illuminating sidelights on the issues.

Illustrated by a series of excellent photographs of the Shroud, pertinent art works, and medical drawings, the book is a valuable addition to the limited material now available in the English language.
