Description
If an angler could have just one book on fish and fishing, this should be it. Byron Dalrymple brings together all the necessary facts on every game fish in the United States - 138 fresh and 190 salt water species - in a book that's as clear, fresh and sparkling as a trout stream, and a pleasure to read.

The book covers every game fish, including characteristics, feeding habits, likes and dislikes, weight, geographical distribution, even best time of day and year to catch the fish. It enables anglers to identify, almost 100 percent sure, every fish on the hook. Dalrymple's descriptions give identifying features, and Douglas Allen's detailed drawings (over 130 in black-and-white), plus 56 full color paintings, show the fish exactly as they look.

Additional information deepens the angler's knowledge of each species. On the smallmouth bass, for example, the book describes the fish as strictly of cold, clear water, rocky shores, big, deep lakes, swift streams. It lies deep, seldom feeds on the surface, usually is caught on deep-running plugs, streamer flies or nymphs, or on bait fished on or near the bottom.

The book fives specific suggestions on tackle, lures, bait to use for each species under various conditions, and best methods for taking each fish, including depths, speed of retrieve, and many other fine points. A unique, helpful feature is inclusion of specific tips on what to expect from some of the trickier fighters.

The book fives preferred common, regional and scientific names of every fish, explains what fish family each belong to, and gives you a good overall picture of the fish world.

And, Dalrymple has sprinkled interesting sidelights on fish. Did you know that the average size of pike depends a great deal on the water where it's found? That sturgeon in the Great Lakes used to run as big as 1500 to 2000 pounds, but today's average is only 200? That the prized golden trout exists only at altitudes of 9000 to 12000 feet?

There is even coverage of some unusual fishing specialties - shooting rays with bow-and-arrow in the Florida Keys (an increasingly popular sport), going after the ferocious alligator gar (be sure to carry a gun).

In writing this book, Dalrymple consulted every important reference book on fish and fishing in the United States, dug deep into his own fishing experience, carefully selected the most pertinent information, and packed as much of it as possible into this all-inclusive reference for every angler.
