Description
In a day of rebels without a cause, beatniks and adolescent boredom, there can hardly be a parent who hasn't paused to ask himself "What should I aim at in the training of my child?" It is a question as pressing as that of any fifty-megaton bomb - a question almost as prone to misunderstanding.

Out of a wealth of experience in dealing with children, coupled with extensive training in the field of child psychology, Father Trese takes a long and penetrating look not only at American Catholic youth, but at their parents who, until they fully understand themselves, cannot really begin to understand their children. Just what role does a child's heritage play in his progress toward well-adjusted maturity? What are the factors that have - or should - contribute to the development of his personality? What form should discipline and punishment take? And, perhaps far more important for the Catholic parent: How can my child become a saint? To all of these questions, Father Trese contributes not so much definitive answers - for they are, after all, questions each parent must ultimately answer for himself - but effective, realistic and workable suggestions. He is able to see the child - and the parent - not only as a psychologist, but as a priest who has encountered both, day-by-day, in their moments of triumph and joy, as well as their times of adversity and indecision.

Father Trese does not smother his subject in the jargon of the psychologist - although he is a trained and experienced psychologist. What he does do is to bring a rich, deep and compassionate insight and understanding to the problems of parent and child, in their relationship to each other, their relationship to God and to the world.

Father Trese was born in Port Huron, Michigan, in 1902. After studies at Mt. St. Mary's Seminary in Norwood, Ohio, he was ordained in 1927. He received his AB from the University of Western Ontario in 1928, and his MA from the University of Detroit. Father Trese served as assistant pastor and pastor in various Detroit parishes from that time until 1950, when he became chaplain at the Vista Maria School in Detroit. He received his EdD from Wayne State University in 1957, his field of doctoral studies being child psychology.

Father Trese is a Contributing Editor of Emmanuel magazine, and has written extensively for The Priest, Ave Maria, Our Sunday Visitor and numerous other periodicals. He is the author of several previous books, among them: Vessel of Clay, A Man Approved, Tenders of the Flock and Sanctified in Truth.
