Description
Msgr. Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer was born in Barbastro, Spain, on January 9, 1902 and died in Rome, in a truly saintly way, on June 26, 1975. On January 30, 1981, the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of the Saints granted the Nihil Obstat for the introduction of the Cause for his beatification and canonization. The Process was formally opened in Rome on May 12, 1981.
Msgr. Josemaria Escriva was ordained on March 28, 1925. On October 2, 1928 he founded Opus Dei, which from the beginning had the approval of the diocesan authorities, and from 1943 also had the approval of the Holy See, which erected Opus Dei as a personal Prelature on November 28, 1982. After 1928, Msgr. Escriva's life coincides with the history and development of Opus Dei, which now counts among its members men and women of 80 nationalities.
Among his published works, as well as the theological legal study La Abadesa de las Huelgas, are the following books of spirituality which have been translated into many languages: The Way, Holy Rosary, Christ is passing by, Friends of God and The Way of the Cross. A book of press interviews has also been published under the title Conversations with Monsignor Escriva de Balaguer.
