Description
"The entire succession of men, throughout so many centuries, should be thought of as one and the same man, ever-present and learning continually." This passage from Pascal expresses an important aspect of the nature of tradition. For tradition - specifically Catholic tradition - is not the handing down of rigid formulas or the forced imitation of pietistic models. Rather it is a principle or guide which insures the continuity and identity of Catholic values for successive generations.

In this volume the famous theologian, Yves Congar, takes up the question of Catholic tradition - what it is and how it applies to the modern Church.

After defining tradition in its broad sense, the author outlines the various elements that comprise tradition and shows how they contribute to the Catholic doctrine of salvation.

In the course of his discussion he emphasizes such interesting points as the Holy Spirit, the magisterium of the hierarchy and the relation of the faithful to tradition.

Congar devotes a substantial portion of his book to the historical developments of tradition, carefully and respectfully explaining Protestant attitudes. Then he shows how the writings of Scripture, the Church Fathers, and the ecumenical councils apply to Catholicism in the twentieth century.

The author avoid the use of highly technical theological terms, clarifies the many difficulties that Christians have in understanding the concepts of tradition, and concludes his discussion by commenting on what he describes as the monuments or witnesses of tradition, such as the liturgy, the Church Fathers and, of course, Scripture itself.

Yves Congar, OP, a theological consultant at the Second Vatican Council, is known primarily for his writings and his work in the liturgical movement. He is the author of several works which have been translated into English including Lay People in the Church and Mystery of the Church.
