Description
"These pages are dedicated to all those who are in search of God," writes Eugene Joly in his introduction to this book, "to those who are willing to examine the atheism into which they have been led by the mental atmosphere around them or by their own reflection, to all those who will face the question, 'What if it were true?' with the honesty with which Christians sometimes ask themselves, 'What if it were not true?'"

This book, the author adds, is concerned simply and solely with meeting the living God.

Faith is an act of the intelligence which requires, in order that we may have confidence in Jesus Christ, guarantees that this confidence is deserved. It is an act of intelligence which tries to understand the message of Jesus, to grasp its coherence and its value. Faith is not a "feeling" which we either have or have not by instinct.

Herein is a comprehensive survey of all that is implied by the statement, "I believe in God," in the mouth of a Christian, together with an examination of the evidence of the authenticity of the Christian experience and the relationship between faith and the total personality of the believer.

Eugene Joly, the author, cure of Notre-dame-de-Lorette and former chaplain of the Cite Universitaire de Paris, is a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. He is the author of a number of books in French, the best-known of which are Guide de Lecture des Lettres de Saint-Paul et de l'Apocalypse, Aux sources bibliques, and Beau Risque de la Foi.

Dom Illtyd Trethowan teaches at the Downside School in England where the translation of the Twentieth Century Encyclopedia of Catholicism is supervised. He is a former editor of the learned journal published at the school, the Downside Review, and author of Certainty, Essay in Christian Philosophy, and Christ in the Liturgy. He is also the translator of E Masure's The Christian Sacrifice.
