Description
The sixty-one million Catholics living in English-speaking countries today exert a vital and dynamic influence not only on their own nations but on the entire Christian world.

In this intriguing and clear study the author succinctly shows the heritage of Catholicism and its now-strong influence in such widely differing lands as England, Scotland, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Mother Mary Peter Carthy begins by outlining the fascinating background of Christianity in Britain and Ireland and in a well-rounded description she shows the rapid development of Christianity within these countries. Then, in a detailed analysis, the author portrays the expansion of both the Catholic influence in Great Britain and lands settled by English-speaking colonists.

After illustrating the effects of the Reformation, she describes the Catholic emancipation in England and the significance of the Church's growth throughout the British Empire and the United States in modern times.

In separate sections she traces the institutional growth of Catholic religious orders, schools and organizations, and then directs her attention to the value and importance of the Catholic press in English-speaking nations.

The effects of Catholicism on both the national life and culture of the various countries is also stressed. The author's concluding chapter deals with the current quest for Christian unity and the way in which it has and will affect the English-speaking peoples.

Mother Mary Peter Carthy, OSU, received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of New Rochelle in 1933.
