Description
"Today eminent scientists are to be found who openly proclaim the Christian faith and do not consider that it puts any obstacles in the way of their activities as scientific investigators."

But, the author of this book notes, this was not always so. Until quite recently there existed a serious opposition between faith and science.

Now, in the words of Pius XII, "true science increasingly discovers God as its progress advances. It is as though He were lying in wait behind every door science opens."

But, while the once-serious problem of hostility between science and Christianity has proved to be a false one, there still remain genuine philosophical problems facing the Christian who is a scientist - problems arising out of Pascal's distinction between the three orders: mind, matter, and supernatural charity.

After first examining the fundamentals of the Christian idea of history - the idea of the coming of the kingdom of God as the central point in history - the author discusses the encounter between Christianity and science through the ages.

The final section deals with such modern philosophical problems as the autonomy of scientific method and the harmony between the spirit of faith and the spirit of research.

Jean Abele was born at Reims in 1886 and entered the Society of Jesus in 1904. He was granted a degree in physics in 1914 and the same year was assigned to help establish a radio network for the French army.

Following his theological studies, Father Abele taught physics and cosmology in the faculty of philosophy of Vol-pre-le-Puy, and later at the Gregorian University in Rome. He was granted the doctor of science degree in 1943.

Christianity and Science was translated from the French by RF Trevett.
