Description
Andrew Bobola, of the Society of Jesus, died at the hands of Cossacks in 1657. The longer and far more remarkable part of his story, however, began forty years later, when the discovery of his miraculously preserved body set in motion a train of extraordinary occurrences that had their climax at Easter, 1938. At that time he was proclaimed a Saint of the Roman Catholic Church and National Patron of Poland.
This biography is therefore much more than the life story of a man who lived long ago. Here is the deeply exciting record of a power, and influence, which has already changed the map of Europe at least once and which will, beyond any reasonable doubt, continue to make history in our own time. The evidence presented illumines the present situation of Poland as no news bulletin can do, and is essential in any attempt to prophesy the future of that nation.
The book has an equally timely appear, moreover, in its larger significance, for in it the magnificent paradox of martyrdom again bears witness to the power of the Spirit against the recurrent floods of materialism and oppression.
