Description
During the summer and early fall of 1917 the Blessed Virgin appeared to three little children in Portugal. One of them, harassed by doubters, requested Our Lady to perform a miracle so that all might know the truth of the apparition. The miracle occurred on October 13, before a multitude of 70,000 people. Since that time devotion to Our Lady of Fatima has become world-wide and she is invoked especially in prayers for peace.

Father McGlynn, author of this book, is a priest-sculptor who went to Portugal in order to make an authentic statue of the Virgin of Fatima. He had the unique privilege of a ten-day visit with Lucy dos Santos, then Sister Dores but now a Carmelite nun, only survivor of the three children to whom the vision appeared. During that time he designed a new statue under her direction and with her assitance until she was completely satisfied that it was a replica of the figure she had seen. A photograph of that statue appears as the frontispiece of this book, and it has been sketched for the cover.

Now Father McGlynn tells the exclusive story of his visit with Lucy and gives to his readers her explanation of the events and meaning of the Fatima revelations. This is a human, factual account of the people he met and the places he saw in Portugal as he traveled to and from the convent where Lucy was staying, stopping on the way to visit the village of Fatima and the Sanctuary of Our Lady there.

Father McGlynn interviewed personally, besides Lucy, members of her family, persons upon whom miraculous cures have been effected at Fatima since it became a shrine to Our Lady, and witnesses of the events of 1917. He also discussed the appearances and subsequent occurrences at Fatima with the Bishop of Fatima and the Cardinal of Lisbon. The Holy Father blessed his completed statue at an audience. Thus from all possible sources he secured new information and new understanding of the revelations, which readers of his book may now share.

This book, the, is the record of a great modern revelation of faith. It is probably the most intimate written record which will ever be published for lay readers. American Catholics and others will read it with especial interest and satisfaction because of the commanding position which Our Lady of Fatima is assuming in the world of today.
